Chris paints a fantastic picture of the Admirals Club. It is odd to read because you immediately think, “wait, I was in this same club!” only to realize, as he points out, they are all the same.
My parents are lifetime members of Northwest World Club (yes, I said lifetime members) and from my visits to the club it sound like Northwest has done a better job than AA. Drinks are free, along with Newspaper and the standard cheese/crackers/some odd Cheesit mix stuff. You do still pay for internet which seems like an odd line to draw.
For me I find the club a nice respite from the airport mess. It is quiet, for the most part relaxing, and I can put my bag down without fearing it will be immediately stolen or detonated by an overaggressive bomb squad. Most of my experience with them has been post red-eye so maybe my will was already broken (stale bread tastes amazing to those that are starving).
From watching my mother I actually thinks she gets a great deal of satisfaction in the fact that the food and drinks are “free.” The connection that she paid some ungodly amount of money to belong? Not made.
My dad lives in the airport and actually holds meetings in the damn club. I would say he is the guy in the sweater but with a laptop instead of a Tom Clancy novel but that doesn’t quite fit. Looks to much like the professor he is to be confused with a business man.
