I have been swimming a couple miles a day during our vacation. I typically head out about 100 yards, follow the beach until I get tired, and then turn around and head back. After about 10 minutes I often get flanked and followed by a couple dolphins. They don’t ever come closer than about 50 feet although if I stop and they don’t realize it they sometimes get as close as about 30 feet but then they fall back. They are kind of hard to see while I’m swimming because I need to time my breathing with their surfacing and the waves create troughs where I can’t seem much further than about 5 feet. They seem to be fairly curious about what I’m up to. The funny part to me is thinking about what is going through their head. Possibilities include:
1. Is that a hurt dolphin? Does he need help?
2. Why is that animal thrashing around in the water? Dear god he is slow.
3. I thought we worked this out with the last administration: humans land, dolphins water
I suppose there is the “could we eat this thing?” but I prefer to believe the dolphins are on my side given the number of other things that would like to eat me in the ocean.
One of the cooler things I’ve seen was a few nights ago when a dolphin breached several times in a row showing off to what I assume was a girl dolphin.
