Kathy makes an argument that Marketing should make the user manuals. I agree with the sentiment of her post, but would change the title. I think it should read “Why the design team should be involved in all aspects of your product.” Her title implies that only the marketing team can make something look good. I have worked with a lot of companies where this is true. I believe the reason many companies make this mistake is rooted in graphic design school curriculum. I’d like to see design schools expand their focus beyond copy and into product design. A good interaction designer with a strong sense for graphic design will change your world.

I agree! And you’re right, I did imply (although not my intention) that *only* the marketing folks should be doing the manual and I imagine that would be the nightmare most imagine it would be. Then again, a manual produced only by the marketing folks might still be more entertaining than the all-too-common bad (but technically correct) manual is virtually unreadable anyway.
I hope more people listen to your advice about this–I completely agree that “a good interaction designer with a strong sense for graphic design will change your world.” We need more of these folks.
Cheers : )
